Someone Else's Mother by Caroline Irby

3-9 December 2020

‘Someone Else’s Mother’ tells the story of the Filipina woman, Juning, who lived with photographer Caroline Irby’s family in London for 22 years and took care of Caroline and her brother when they were young, and of the four children who she left behind, who grew up with their grandmother in the Philippines.  Juning and Caroline were very close - Caroline spent more time with Juning than any other adult as a young child; meanwhile Juning's children’s closest bond was with their grandmother; they saw their mother only every second year.
The story is told through images made by Caroline (on a Rolleiflex) during three trips to Juning's island; archive pictures from Juning and Caroline's father’s albums, interviews with Juning and her four children, and Caroline’s own recollections of a childhood spent with Juning.
