The Lost Fringe by The Other Richard

27 August - 2 September 2020

For the first time in over 70 years, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe will not be going ahead in August 2020, due to Covid-19 – a huge blow to artists and the city alike. In a series titled ‘The Lost Fringe’, we documented what this looks like from two opposing perspectives: the acts with no venues, and the venues with no acts.

Covid-19 has proven the fragility of the arts sector and in doing so reinforced it’s necessity. We want the complementing works to serve as a powerful reminder of the importance the performing arts plays in our everyday lives; providing spaces for art to come alive and act as a prism through which to assimilate and understand ourselves and the world around us.

Having photographed 27 acts and venues over four weeks, It’s heart-warming to feel such a strong sense of community - something we’ve come to associate with the Fringe and a reminder of what’s at stake.

The Other Richard originated at the Fringe in 2015. We feel incredible gratitude to this community and the Festival itself. It means so much for us to be able to document this strange moment in it’s history.
